The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
