The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
