Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
