The pre-Ashes verbal sparring continues to heat up, with ex-England paceman Broad stating that the English side will confront "arguably the weakest Australian team since 2010" during their tour this winter.

Warner's Bold Prediction Answered by Skepticism

The former England bowler's claim was in response to Warner – an Ashes foe of Broad’s – predicting a 4-0 victory for the hosts. "If the captain [Pat Cummins] doesn’t play, they might win one game," Warner said.

Australia have not lost a men’s Ashes match on home soil after England's series win in 2010-11. Their 5-0 win three years later – on the back of seven defeats in their previous nine Tests – was followed by 4-0 series victories in the 2017-18 and 2021-22 campaigns.

Team Doubt and Injury Concerns for the Hosts

Yet, the top-ranked Test side, who have lost only one of their past 13 bilateral series, enter the upcoming assignment with uncertainty over the composition of their batting lineup and the fitness of Pat Cummins, who is unlikely to feature in the first Test at the Perth stadium because of a back issue.

"It's extremely challenging to win in Australia as an English team, or any side," said Broad during his podcast. "Australia have to be strong favorites."

"Australia are under the most pressure because they’re expected to win, they’re brilliant at home, but they’ve got question marks over their team and question marks over their captain’s fitness. You wouldn’t be outlandish in thinking – it’s actually not an opinion, it's a reality – it is likely the worst Australian team since 2010. Meanwhile, it's the strongest England squad in over a decade. So those things match up to the reality that it’s going to be a brilliant contest."

Comparison to Historic Tour

"The Australians have remained so consistent for a long period of time that you just knew who would open the batting, who would bat, which bowlers were available, and they don’t have that. It’s very much a comparable scenario to 2010-11 when England traveled and emerged victorious. The reality is Australia generally have to be bad to lose in Australia and England must excel. The English have a solid opportunity of performing exceptionally and the Australians face a real possibility of being bad."

Team Decision for England

A major issue for England remains their selection at No 3, with Pope and Bethell contesting the spot. Cook, whose prolific scoring paved the way for the visitors' series victory 15 years ago, believes it would be "strange" for Ben Stokes’ side to abandon Pope, who has been a regular at number three for the last three years.

"I would bat Ollie Pope at three," Cook stated. "In my view it’s quite an easy choice. They have someone who’s been involved in this preparation for several years. He’s captained the side, he’s played remarkable performances for England and he’s a hundred-maker. He understands how to make big scores in first-class cricket. If you get rid of him now, I believe that alters the entire balance of the foundation they've established over the last few years."

Although praising Jacob Bethell as "an incredibly talented player", Cook added: "It would be a major risk [to pick him] because should it fail where do you move back to, someone you’ve just got rid of? They’ve invested so much in players such as Ollie Pope and [Crawley that it would be highly odd to make a switch at this stage."

Captaincy Change and Commentary Team

Ollie Pope has been succeeded by Harry Brook as England’s vice-captain but, according to Cook, that will "ease the burden on" the Surrey batsman.

"They’ve been proactive on that, considering in case of an injury to Stokes, they have a player in Harry Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and everyone has seen that he seems to be well suited to it. That will just take the pressure off. I believe it won't undermine him. Certainly it will have disappointed him because anytime you get taken off a leadership thing it wouldn’t be ideal, but I don’t think it diminishes his standing."

Cook will be in the host nation as part of the broadcast team of the Ashes, and will be accompanied by fellow Ashes winners Finn and Graeme Swann as in-studio analysts. The channel will offer a dedicated commentary stream but will use a mixed approach, with commentators Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch to work off-site in the United Kingdom, while Cook, Finn and Swann provide co-commentary from Australia. Ebony Rainford-Brent is also part of the broadcast team working off-site, with the live presentation to be hosted by Ives.
