Anthony Barry Reveals The Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Barry featured in League Two. Currently, he is focused to assist the head coach win the World Cup next summer. His journey from player to coach commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his destiny.

Rapid Rise

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a name through unique exercises and great man-management. His stints with teams included elite sides, plus he took on international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the top in his words.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a methodical process that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”

Driven Leaders

Barry describes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “We want to dominate each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. It’s our job to not only anticipate with developments but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We have to play a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it during that time. We need to progress from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ all the time available from when we started. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. The team has secured qualification by winning all six games and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach should represent all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the strength, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared now. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst to get better knows no bounds. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class featured big names including former players. So, to build his skill set, he went into the most challenging environments available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison locally, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He earned his license with top honors, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, in which he examined numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
